Spie is working in IJmuiden on the North Sea Canal Project. SPIE entered into this 5-year integrated performance contract with the Rijkswaterstaat (the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management). It is one of the first contracts that covers more than just solely maintenance. It also entails providing information about the status of the properties. The performance contract emphasizes the market vision of the Rijkswaterstaat. The surrounding area plays an important role. The nuisance to users and local residents from the maintenance activities must be limited as much as possible. A good example of the minimizing of inconvenience was the replacement of the sluice gates of three locks. Noise nuisance from diesel generators

Diesel generators are used in this project. These generators are not in use 24/7. The diesel engine in generators makes a lot of noise. The air blown through the housing for cooling also produces a continuous monotonous sound. A normal generator puts out about 65 to 70 decibels of noise. This can be a real inconvenience for local residents. Spie sought a solution that would minimize this inconvenience.

Every reduction by 3 decibels cuts noise in half

Heras has Noise Control Barriers in its product assortment as standard. The number of decibels can be reduced significantly by placing these as close as possible to the source. Heras Noise Control Barriers

Spie opted for the Heras solution. About 450 metres of semi-permanent mobile fence was installed and fitted with Noise Control Barriers 2.0. This row of fencing was placed as close as possible to the generators. About 500 metres of semi-pemanent open mobile fence was also installed. This row of fences shields the road from construction traffic from the surrounding area.
